Western Cape Storm Causes Widespread Damage as Heavy Rain and Gale Force Winds Batter Cape Town
Severe weather has lashed the Western Cape, leaving a trail of destruction across Cape Town and surrounding areas as powerful winds and heavy rain cause flooding, road closures, fallen trees and structural damage.
Residents across the Western Cape are battling dangerous weather conditions as a powerful storm system continues to sweep across the province, bringing heavy rainfall, damaging winds and widespread disruption.
The South African Weather Service issued high level warnings for disruptive rainfall and strong winds across large parts of the province, with emergency services placed on high alert as conditions worsened throughout Monday.
Across Cape Town, multiple roads were flooded or blocked by fallen trees and debris, while reports of damaged roofs, power outages and structural damage continued to emerge from several suburbs. Informal settlements and low lying areas were among the hardest hit as persistent rain saturated the ground and overwhelmed drainage systems.
In Kenilworth, strong winds caused severe damage to a Clicks store, with large sections of the exterior structure and roofing collapsing onto the pavement and roadway during intense rain and gusting winds. Debris was scattered across the area as workers and emergency responders assessed the damage.
Authorities warned that the storm system could continue to bring dangerous conditions over the next 24 to 48 hours, with risks including localised flooding, mudslides, fallen trees and hazardous driving conditions.
Disaster management teams remain on standby while residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay clear of flooded roads, damaged buildings and downed power lines.
The latest storm follows several days of severe weather across parts of the Western and Eastern Cape, where heavy rainfall has already caused flooding, infrastructure damage and road closures in multiple districts.
Motorists travelling through Cape Town on Monday morning faced major delays as strong winds and heavy rain reduced visibility and caused dangerous conditions on major routes. Several schools and businesses also reported weather related disruptions.
Weather forecasts indicate that cold, wet and windy conditions are expected to persist into the week before gradually improving later in the week.
