Recent Rockfalls Raise Safety Concerns on Franschhoek Pass

Motorists travelling through the scenic Franschhoek Pass have once again been urged to exercise caution following recent rockfalls and severe weather conditions affecting the area.

Heavy rainfall across the Cape Winelands has triggered unstable slopes, debris flows, and dangerous driving conditions along sections of the iconic mountain route.

Images and videos shared on social media over the past few days show mud, rocks, and flowing water covering parts of the roadway after intense rain moved through the region. Authorities have warned that continued wet weather significantly increases the risk of additional rockfalls along steep mountain passes such as Franschhoek Pass.

The pass, which connects Franschhoek and Villiersdorp via the R45, is well known for its dramatic scenery but is also vulnerable to weather related damage during winter storms. Provincial officials have previously closed the route during periods of severe rainfall to protect motorists from falling rocks and unstable slopes.

This is not the first time the pass has experienced major rockfall incidents. In 2019, multiple rockfalls forced authorities to shut the route for months after large boulders crashed onto the roadway during heavy rain. One incident left a motorist injured after rocks struck his vehicle. Geotechnical investigations and emergency slope stabilisation work were later carried out before the road could safely reopen.

Local authorities continue to monitor the stability of the mountain slopes, especially during periods of prolonged rain. Drivers are advised to avoid unnecessary travel through mountain passes during severe weather alerts and to remain alert for falling debris, flooding, and slippery road surfaces.
