Cape Town Waste Collection Delays Expected Amid Severe Weather
The City of Cape Town has warned residents to expect refuse collection and disposal delays as heavy rainfall, flooding and strong winds continue disrupting operations across the metro.
Residents across Cape Town are being urged to prepare for delays in refuse collection and waste disposal services as severe weather conditions continue affecting large parts of the metro.
The City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Directorate says persistent rainfall, localised flooding and strong winds have created major operational challenges for collection teams. Several roads and neighbourhoods have become difficult or impossible for waste vehicles to access, while traffic congestion on alternative routes is slowing down services even further.
According to the City, strong winds have also affected transfer station operations, forcing collection vehicles to travel longer distances to landfill sites. This has placed additional pressure on already strained waste management services.
Residents are encouraged to continue placing their bins outside daily until collections are completed. In most areas, delays are expected to remain within two days of the normal collection schedule, although some severely affected communities could experience longer disruptions.
The City has also advised residents to avoid unnecessary trips to landfill and drop off facilities while dangerous weather conditions persist. Some sites are operating at reduced capacity, while others may temporarily close depending on safety assessments and flooding risks.
To help reduce pressure on waste services during the disruptions, residents are encouraged to recycle where possible and compost organic waste at home. Officials say reducing household waste volumes can assist crews in catching up faster once weather conditions improve.
Waste collection teams may continue working over weekends in an effort to clear backlogs across the city. Residents whose bins remain uncollected after three days are encouraged to report the issue through the City’s official service channels.
The severe weather system impacting the Western Cape has already caused widespread flooding, transport disruptions and infrastructure strain across several municipalities. Authorities continue to monitor conditions closely as further rainfall and strong winds remain possible this week.
