Level 8 Storm Warning for Parts of South Africa as Severe Weather Hits

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple severe weather warnings for the week, including an Orange Level 8 alert, as an intense cut-off low pressure system moves across the country.

Citizens in several provinces are urged to prepare for widespread disruptive rainfall, potential flooding, and hazardous conditions from 5 to 7 May 2026. Disaster response teams in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal are on high alert.

Affected Areas and Warnings

The weather system is expected to bring scattered to widespread showers, with the most significant impact anticipated along the southern coastline. The Garden Route is expected to bear the brunt of the storm, with a Level 8 warning for disruptive rainfall. This includes the areas of George, Knysna, Mossel Bay, and Oudtshoorn.

Other warnings include:

• Orange Level 6: In place for the Central Karoo and western parts of the Garden Route.
• Yellow Level 2 & 4: Issued for parts of Gauteng, including Johannesburg.
• Yellow Level 2: In effect for the central interior of the Western Cape and the Northern Cape.

SAWS uses a warning scale from 1 to 10 to indicate the potential impact of weather events.

The heavy rainfall predicted significantly increases the risk of flooding, especially in low-lying and vulnerable areas. SAWS has warned of several potential impacts, including the flooding of roads and settlements, which could lead to property damage and leave some communities temporarily inaccessible.

Authorities have advised that damage to infrastructure, loss of livestock, and impacts on livelihoods are possible if the conditions worsen.

SAWS recommendations:

• Postpone travel arrangements if possible.
• Stay informed by listening to regular weather updates on the radio or social media.
• Do not attempt to cross swollen rivers or streams, whether on foot or in a vehicle. If the water is above your ankles, it is not safe.
• If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it and move to higher ground.
• In homes and buildings, move valuable items to a level safe from potential floodwater.

Insurance company Santam also advises homeowners to perform preventative maintenance, such as checking roofs for leaks and ensuring gutters are clear to allow for proper drainage. The associated cold weather can also cause water pipes to burst, and residents should be vigilant for leaks.
