Foggy and Cool Start to the Week Forecast for South Africa

Cool and Foggy Conditions to Kick Off the Week

South Africa is set for a cool and cloudy start to the week, with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasting morning fog for most of the country on Monday. These conditions will affect the morning commute in several provinces before clearing for a partly cloudy and cool afternoon in most regions.

Widespread Morning Fog

The most significant weather feature for Monday morning will be fog patches, which are expected across a wide area.

Provinces where residents can expect fog include:

  • Gauteng
  • Mpumalanga (over the Highveld)
  • Limpopo (in the central parts)
  • Free State (over the central and eastern parts)
  • Northern Cape
  • Western Cape (along the coast and interior)
  • Eastern Cape (over the interior)
  • KwaZulu-Natal (over the interior)

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution during the morning commute. Reduced visibility can make for dangerous driving conditions. Remember to reduce your speed, increase your following distance, and use your low-beam headlights.

Rain in the North-East

While most of the country remains dry, some north-eastern provinces will see showers and rain. Mpumalanga's Lowveld and escarpment areas are expected to receive rainfall, as are most parts of Limpopo, with the exception of the far southern and south-western regions. KwaZulu-Natal may see isolated rain in the extreme north-east.

Provincial Temperature Guide

Cool temperatures will prevail across the country. Major metropolitan areas will experience mild daytime conditions.

  • Gauteng: Johannesburg is forecast to have a temperature range of 8°C to 21°C, while Pretoria will range from 5°C to 23°C.
  • Mpumalanga: Mbombela will be cool, with temperatures between 13°C and 20°C.
  • Western Cape: Cape Town can expect a cool day, with a low of 13°C and a high of 20°C.
  • KwaZulu-Natal: Durban will be slightly warmer, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 24°C.

Warmer conditions are expected in the northern parts of the Northern Cape, with Upington reaching up to 28°C, and in the Lowveld areas of Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
