Intense Cut-Off Low To Affect Cape Provinces

An intense cut-off low-pressure system is set to sweep across South Africa this week, bringing a spell of adverse weather. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for conditions expected to primarily affect the Eastern Cape and the eastern parts of the Western Cape from Tuesday evening through Thursday.

Residents in these regions should prepare for disruptive rainfall, which could lead to localised flooding of roads, bridges, and low-lying areas. The system is also expected to generate strong interior winds and gale-force coastal winds. Along the coastline, damaging waves and a potential storm surge could disrupt marine activities. Additionally, disruptive snowfall is possible over high-lying areas.

Widespread Weather Warnings

Starting Monday, the effects of the incoming system were already being felt. A Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms was issued for the central parts of the Eastern Cape, cautioning against heavy downpours, damaging winds, and hail that could cause damage to settlements and infrastructure.

The impact is not limited to the Cape provinces. Severe thunderstorms are also anticipated over the western parts of North West province, the north-western Free State, and the north-eastern Northern Cape. These storms bring the risk of localised flooding and damage to vulnerable structures.

For coastal regions, SAWS has warned of damaging waves between Port Edward and Kosi Bay. These conditions could present a danger to small vessels and disrupt operations at small harbours.

Regional Outlook

Western Cape: Cape Town and the surrounding south-western parts can expect cloudy and cold conditions with widespread showers. Forecasts for the city indicate significant rainfall early in the week.

Eastern Cape: Ahead of the main system, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected, becoming more intense from Tuesday onwards.

Gauteng & Other Interior Provinces: Gauteng and Mpumalanga are forecast to have partly cloudy and cool to warm weather with some isolated showers. Conditions are also favourable for the first frost of the season to appear along the Lesotho border, as well as in the southern Free State and Northern Cape.
