9 Incredible Ways to Experience Winter in South Africa

Winter often gets a bad reputation, but in South Africa it's one of the most rewarding seasons to get outdoors and explore. While some parts of the country wake up to frost and icy mornings, others enjoy crisp sunny days, spectacular whale sightings and some of the clearest night skies of the year.
Whether you're chasing snow or simply looking for an excuse to grab a hot chocolate, here are some winter experiences worth adding to your bucket list.

1. See Snow in the Drakensberg

Snow isn't guaranteed every winter, but when cold fronts combine with freezing mountain temperatures, the Drakensberg transforms into a breathtaking winter wonderland.
If you're lucky enough to visit after a snowfall, you'll find incredible scenery, hiking opportunities and some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country.

3. Visit a Cosy Cabin

Winter is the perfect excuse to escape to the mountains.
Whether it's a cabin in the Cederberg, a cottage in the Midlands or a hideaway in Mpumalanga, there's nothing quite like watching the rain fall outside while you're wrapped in a blanket beside a fireplace.

Thanks to winter rainfall in the Western Cape and seasonal rivers elsewhere, many waterfalls are at their most impressive during winter.

7. Visit Kruger National Park

Winter is one of the best seasons for a safari in Kruger National Park. The cooler temperatures make game drives far more comfortable, and the dry winter weather means vegetation is thinner and animals gather around rivers and waterholes, making wildlife easier to spot.
